BACKGROUND:
Basic
• Not much is known about Lan Jingyi's birth or family background.
• A disciple of the Gusu Lan sect.
• Best friends with Lan Sizhui.

Mo Village
• Lan Jingyi arrives at the Mo household (at Mo Village) together with a group of Gusu Lan junior cultivators, led by Lan Sizhui, to deal with walking corpses plaguing the area.
• Unknown to the juniors, this is the same household where Mo Xuanyu sacrificed his soul to summon back the evil spirit of the Yiling Patriach, Wei Wuxian, to inhabit his body.
• The evil being they encounter ends up being more than they could handle, despite their best efforts to counter and fight it.
• Lan Jingyi sends off the sect's signal flare for assistance, while Wei Wuxian secretly lends them a hand to deal with the evil being until Lan Wangji's arrival has the situation under control.

Dafan Mountain
• A night hunt session to investigate a soul-consuming creature, bringing them to the Goddess Temple.
• The creature (essentially the goddess statue) is too powerful for the junior cultivators (from the Gusu Lan sect and smaller cultivation clans) to take down.
• Once again, Wei Wuxian comes to their rescue, and in the course of the event, incidentally summoned the Ghost General, Wen Ning, to fight against the goddess statue.
• Despite the Gusu Lan juniors' shocked reactions to Wei Wuxian's frivolous and indecent behaviours towards Lan Wangji, the former is brought back to Cloud Recesses.

Cloud Recesses
• Lan Jingyi (and a few Gusu Lan juniors) are continuously appalled by Wei Wuxian's inappropriate conducts.
• The spirit summoning ritual of the ghost arm - the evil being from Mo Village - is successfully suppressed with the combined efforts of Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian.
• The disciples are tasked with caring for those injured during the summoning while the two seniors left to investigate the source of the ghost arm.

Yi City
• Some time later, the junior disciples (consisting of the Gusu Lan sect and other smaller clans) are lured to Yi City while on their respective night hunts, where they also bump into Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji.
• Lan Jingyi and a few juniors are affected by corpse poisoning, who are later cured by Wei Wuxian's super duper spicy glutinous rice congee.
• Through Wei Wuxian's guidance and involvement, the juniors learn about the events that transpired in Yi City.
• In the aftermath, Lan Jingyi suggests to the juniors that they burn funeral paper money for Xiao Xingchen and A-Qing, who readily agrees.
• The juniors (along with Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji) stay the night at a nearby inn.
• Lan Jingyi (and some of the braver juniors) bought alcohol and attempt to sneakily steal a few sips of it, despite knowing that alcohol consumption is forbidden for Gusu Lan disciples.
• They are interrupted by the unexpected appearance of the two seniors, shocked and baffled by what they saw.
• The Gusu Lan juniors later part ways with the other junior cultivators.

Tanzhou
• Lan Jingyi (and the Gusu Lan juniors) listen raptly to Lan Sizhui's retelling of young Wei Wuxian's shenanigans.
• The Gusu Lan juniors come face-to-face with a headless corpse, which turns out to belong to the ghost arm that had managed to attach itself back with its other limbs.
• The headless corpse is taken care of by Lan Xichen and Lan Wangji, before the juniors are sent away.

Burial Mounds
• Lan Jingyi and many of the junior cultivators (from Gusu Lan sect as well as others) are kidnapped, then left tied up inside the Demon-Slaughtering Cave for a few days.
• The juniors are saved by Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, and Wen Ning.
• Lan Jingyi, Lan Sizhui and a few others join the Ghost General in fighting against the fierce corpses.
• When a second wave of fierce corpses attack, the juniors returns to lend their three rescuers a hand.
• In the aftermath, everyone (including the senior cultivators who arrived later) travel by boat to Lotus Pier at Yunmeng.

Guanyin Temple
• Lan Jingyi joins the other cultivators to rescue those at the temple, taking in the aftermath of the events that transpired.
• Only later will they be enlightened of MAJOR PLOT SPOILERS(tm).

Iron Hook
• Lan Jingyi and the Gusu Lan juniors partake in a night hunt arranged by Jin Ling to investigate the mysterious White Room at the Bai residence.
• With Wei Wuxian as their sort-of mentor, the juniors succeed in dealing with the Iron Hook and the White Room mystery.

PERSONALITY:
Let's talk about the most un-Lan Lan to ever Lan'd in the history of Lan, shall we?

As a disciple of Gusu Lan sect, Lan Jingyi is brought up by strict regulations and is a stickler for rules. In addition, like most of the young disciples, he is a little bit sheltered in the ways of the common people and their daily lives, much like the modern equivalent of youths from affluent or privileged families. For example, not bringing extra signal flares because they've never used or needed it. Or how they couldn't quite comprehend the harsh realities of life that they experience.

He dislikes those who break the rules and are noisy, as in the case of Wei Wuxian (in the body of Mo Xuanyu). Despite that, Jingyi himself is prone to being loud and noisy as well, especially when angered or irritated due to his short-tempered. He is brash and impulsive, occasionally acting or saying something first before thinking it through, although it had been for the sake of the those in the vicinity. He yells at the people of the Mo household not to run and panic so as not to allow evil spirits to take advantage of the chaos. On a few occasions, he has also threatened to hit Wei Wuxian, going so far as to even grab him by his collar, though he never go ahead with the threats.

Jingyi usually speaks his mind in a straightforward manner without mincing his words, more often than not breaking the sect rule of not talking behind other people's back. This is most apparent when he comments about Sect Leader Jiang, or the Yiling Patriarch, Wei Wuxian, or anyone that he finds disagreeable. Even then, that doesn't stop Jingyi from saying it to their face either, as in the case with Jin Ling by calling him "Young Mistress". Hence the constant bickering between the two juniors. On the other hand, he is honest with his words, getting the point across without beating around the bush.

Compared to his best friend, Lan Sizhui, Jingyi isn't the most observant and tends to dismiss details that may otherwise prove important or useful in later times. He doesn't even suspect Mo Xuanyu (really Wei Wuxian) when Sizhui pointed out his disappearance and simply assumed the "lunatic" ran away. And yet at other times Jingyi is able to notice things that are not what they seem, where he begins to realise that Mo Xuanyu (Wei Wuxian) isn't as crazy as people make him out to be. He is also able to react and come up with solutions quickly under duress, reminding Sizhui and the juniors about other methods to restraint evil beings.

He is also a warm-hearted and caring person, subsequently also extending it to Wei Wuxian even after the latter's true identity as the Yiling Patriarch is revealed. He and Sizhui are amongst those who come to Wei Wuxian's defence when the other cultivators point their fingers and intend to kill the Yiling Patriarch. It goes to show that Jingyi stands up for what he believes is right, evident when he and the juniors fight against the fierce corpse alongside Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji, and Wen Ning. They do so again during the second wave of attack despite repeated warnings and orders not to do so.

Despite his bravery, or the fact that he a cultivator who is supposed to deal with ghosts, evil spirits, and whatnot, Jingyi is surprisingly afraid of ghosts. On the occasion that he has to deal with or encounter them, Jingyi shows his fear. At Yi City, he was reluctant to look through the opening to "study" and "take note" of the ghost A-Qing outside when prompted by Wei Wuxian. The same happens at the Bai residence where Jingyi is made to sit in front of the White Room and observe the strange events unfolding within. Even then, Jingyi does his best to overcome his fears instead of running from it.

In contrast to the reserved nature of the Gusu Lan disciples, Jingyi wears his heart on his sleeve. His thoughts and emotions are clear as day for all to see. He reacts with passion, especially to stories that touches and affects him. When Wei Wuxian tells them about the backstory at Yi City, Jingyi cries the loudest, lamenting the tragic fates of the dead, especially A-Qing, which leads to the juniors burning paper money for them. He also reacts towards tales of injustice and violence, as in the case with the Hook Hand and his Iron Hook.

Jingyi also has a somewhat open mind, gradually absorbing Wei Wuxian's teachings and advice during their night hunts. In fact, after Wei Wuxian comes to the rescue of the juniors a few times prior, Jingyi's respect and acknowledgement of "Senior Wei" steadily grows. Not only that, he begins to somewhat accepts Wei Wuxian's relationship with Lan Wangji, the esteemed Hanguang-jun whom he and the disciples hold in high regard. He would ask Wei Wuxian's opinion of Lan Wangji, seeking his agreement, or even act out a scene of two people who are loathe to part from each other (much like very close friends or lovers).

Much like the Gusu Lan junior disciples, Lan Jingyi greatly admires Lan Wangji ("Hanguang-jun! Hanguang-jun aaaahhhh!) and regards the senior as a role model, his excitement and relief clear on his face every time the latter appears. While there's a bit of fear, mostly due to the possibility of being punished due to breaking rules, Jingyi highly respects Lan Wangji. It is also due to this that Jingyi begins to look upon Wei Wuxian in a new light.

All in all, Jingyi is a bit of an excitable pup who's somewhat afraid of ghosts. But he'll come between anyone who threatens the people he cares about.

POWERS/ABILITIES:
• Cultivation : The ability to control spuritual/qi energy, enhancing one's senses, strength, speed and other abilities. It includes controlling (his own) spiritual weapon as well as flying on it.
Six Arts
• Sword fighting : Is quite proficient at it, managing to fight against fierce corpses while at Burial Mounds.
• Arm strength : Due to all the handstand training (and punishment while copying the Gusu Lan sect rules).
• Talismans & arrays : While the talismans are usually pre-written runes due to the disciples not being high level enough yet, they can use the talismans for protection, warding, or attack. Simple arrays can be drawn to keep fierce corpse contained, or use their swords imbued with their spiritual energy to form barriers.
• Hand sign : Used to manipulate the element though this is only seen once when the junior disciples use this skill to manipulate and fan the flames of the hearth in an attempt to melt the iron hook.
• Lan music techniques : A cultivation method unique to the Gusu Lan sect that uses music as a medium for various purposes. Jingyi isn't shown to be using Lan music techniques, but he is assumed to have learned to play music.
